Having a backup plan can be doing nothing or changing plans if the first one fails. For instance, if you’re going for five days, then if you only have one day left before needing to start preparing for another day, then doing nothing would not hurt your chances of finishing the trip!
Both camping and hotel stays are possible on this trip, so it is ideal to have at least one place to stay each night. If not, than having two full days of prep time is helpful.
In addition to having a good understanding of your own needs, it’s important to know how much is appropriate for someone else.

Pick a campsite
There are two things that determine whether or not a campsite is the right one for you. The first is whether or not you can find a better one of your own. The second is whether or not the site you find is a good fit for your kind of campsite.
The first thing to look for is whether or not it’s a public campsite. This means that there are certain restrictions on where and whom you can invite to use the site. Snowbound sites are usually prohibited, due to the risk of snow blindness and snow buildup.
Bring the right equipment
You’ll need a few things to get started on your backpacking trip. These include:
a map or guidebook that provides information on where and how to find food and water
food, especially food that is depleted or perishable
water, if you will be eating mostly out-and-about
a pillow to support your neck while sleeping; if you’ll be awake during the day, this should have a light source so you can keep watch over time. Morning coffee or tea is good sources of caffeine and nutrition.

Keep it clean
While it is fun to backpack, it can become a little stressful if you have to stop or are forced to stop due to the dirtiness of your backpack, containers, or yourself.
You can spend a lot of time cleaning and washing your things, but if you do not follow proper sanitation practices, then the bacteria and virus that you would want to fight off would spread throughout your pack and hurt your friends and yourself.
It is recommended that you thoroughly wash all items with clean water and soap before putting them in your pack, including food items such as vegetables and snacks.
Washing your pack will also help with hot weather conditions where water will be difficult to obtain. If something gets contaminated while you are away, you can clean it back at home before sending it back out.
Keep an eye out for signs of sickness or injury while backpacking so that people can help others.
