My excitement rose as the plane landed. My seat wasn’t far from the door but everyone in front of me seemed exit so slowly. I thought I’d be tired after such a long flight. I wasn’t. Daydreams of my destination, my travel companion waiting for me, and my big news made the five hours pass quickly.
As I waited in the customs line, I reached into my handbag for the hundredth time. Not to check for my passport but to make sure I had the box.
I did worry about getting my ride to the hotel. Some person should be waiting for me outside of customs with my name on a sign. I didn’t know where the person would be or if he would really be there.
Customs went smoothly and I felt a warm rush of air and burst of bright sunlight as I opened the huge doors out of the airport. My eyes adjusted and thankfully I quickly found a man with my name on a sign. As I walked in his direction, my husband appeared from behind him.
I ran over and hugged him tightly. It was a surprise that he was able to leave his business meetings to come to the airport. We climbed into the van for our ride to the resort. I was happy! Then my husband reached under his seat and pulled out a prepared lunch in a plastic container. He explained that he’d had the hotel prepare it since he thought I’d be hungry.
Was this the sweetest man ever?
We arrived at the hotel and said a few greetings to some of his associates. As we made our way to the room, he pointed out all the hotel’s great amenities. There were three pools, beautiful sea views from large white beds where you could watch whales while relaxing, tall palm trees and lush flowers everywhere. We took cool, marble tiled breezeways to our room. A rich, wood, slatted door led into our room. It was fabulous! The large king bed made up with pristine white sheets. The balcony offered an amazing view.
After a sweet reunion, I couldn’t wait any longer.
“Do you want to open your anniversary present now?” I asked.
“What? You brought my present? I didn’t bring yours. We should wait until we get home,” he said.
“No, no, no. Open it now.”
“Really? Are you sure?” he asked.
“Yes, yes. Open it!” I could hardly contain my excitement.
He unwrapped the gift and opened the box.
“Aaah, chapsticks,” he said trying to sound appreciative. “Thanks.”
The first gift I ever gave him was chapstick. He is somewhat of a chapstick addict. Of course, I don’t just get plain chapstick, I get different flavors and brands. I’m always getting new ones for him to try. He liked the four new chapsticks but I knew he wouldn’t be that impressed.
“Wait, is that all?” I asked.
He pulled the cotton filler from the box to reveal my surprise. His eyes grew wide. He looked at me. “Is this for real?”
I nodded my head.
He dropped the box and pulled me into his arms with a huge hug.
“You’re going to make the best dad!”
