Aging Expectations

My Final Summer Update

summerSummer is officially over. Posting about my kids going back to school makes it real.

At the beginning of summer, I posted my bucket list of all the things I wanted to do with my family. It was a long list. 75 things to be exact.

I did go on record and said:

This is just the plan. I am in no-way guaranteeing we will do all these things (or any of them!).”

The good news is we did do some of them. 33 of them. It’s not even 50% but it’s something and I do believe I would have done a lot less if I hadn’t made the list.

Here’s what we actually did…

 

  • ice creamIce cream party
    Completed!
    Any time you have ice cream, it’s successful.
  • Visit the Cape May Zoo
    We did not do this. We were very close but we couldn’t do another zoo.
  • Learn about the Eiffel Tower
    Completed!
    franceIt turned more into learning about France but it was fun.
  • Visit Philadelphia
    Completed!

  • See a live performance of Pinnochio
    Completed!
    We went to the Arden Theatre and had a great time.
  • Visit Storybook Land
    Completed.
    storybook landWe love this place. If you have a child between 2-8, I would suggest going!!
  • Watch a beach sunrise
    Nope. I just couldn’t bring myself to get up that early.
  • Go for a family bike ride (multiple times)
    Nope. Not even once. Totally disappointed about this one.
  • Pick strawberries and/or blueberries
    Nope. We had a great opportunity to pick blueberries. My daughter had a mini piano recital at a blueberry farm but we had to leave early for my son’s soccer game so we couldn’t stay to pick and then…the season was over.
  • Bubble blowing fun
    Completed.
    And, yes Leah spilled the bubbles.
    Every.
    Time.
  • Pick a state to research and plan a trip to visit
    Nope.
  • Decorate water bottles
    Semi-completed. We got water bottles but we didn’t decorate them.
    I couldn’t find paint that wouldn’t wash off.
    I know, I could have looked harder.
  • betsyScrapbook all our fun
    Nope!
    Again, completely disappointed by this one!
  • Visit Betsy Ross house
    Completed!

  • Go camping in the backyard
    Completed!
    My husband and Leah did it. Adorable.
    Of course, they only made it until 4am but it totally counts.
    My son and I slept downstairs since the tent wasn’t big enough for all four of us.

  • Visit a carnival
    Completed!

    We went to Circ Du Soleil so I’m counting this!
  • Visit AdventureAquarium
    Completed.
    For a gift, our friend took my daughter with her son for a visit.
    I didn’t actually go but I’m counting it because she did!

  • Have a Bar-b-Que

    Completed!
    We took many walks.
    I wanted to make a map with Leah but we didn’t actually do that.

  • Have a watermelon seed spitting contest
    Nope.
    We couldn’t find a watermelon with big enough seeds!
  • Create an acts of kindness list and complete it
    Nope.
  • Have a beach day
    Completed!

  • Paint on real canvas and hang up our works
    Nope.
    But this is happening within a few days.
  • Have a water balloon fight

    We had a great time.
    Look forward to a full feature coming.
  • Go on a boat ride
    Nope.
  • Do a light house tour
    Nope.
  • Create our own puppets and have a puppet show

    We didn’t really but this one time, we were in the car and Leah put her socks on her hands and had a puppet show so  I’m counting it as half!
  • Go bug collecting (and release)
    Nope.

  • Visit the Delaware Zoo
    Nope.
  • Go rock collecting and paint them
    Nope.
  • Make funnel cake
    Completed.
    It was okay. Not as good as a carnival.
  • Build a fairy house

  • partyPlan and have a birthday party for Leah (ugh!)

  • Make elaborate sidewalk chalk drawings
    Completed!
    Of course, I did most of it.
  • Make artwork placemats
    Nope.
  • Learn about the Tower of Pisa

  • Conduct our 2nd annual sandwich contest

  • Make homemade pretzels
    Completed.
    This was a disaster!
    We might try it again though.

  • Play a championship game of kick ball
    Nope.
  • Learn about the pyramids
    Nope.
  • Conduct our first annual backyard olympics

  • Conduct our first annual dessert contest
    Nope.
  • Go to a movie
    Completed!
    Monster’s University – awesome!
  • Volunteer at a charity
    Nope.
  • Have Opposite Day
    Nope.
  • Make paper lanterns

  • Take photos of Leah’s toy and create a scrapbook

    We didn’t actually go to the Zoo we went to the “sister” Safari Park.

    Didn’t actually go to Sea World but went to the Sea Life Aquarium at Legoland.

    We sent Thank You notes for Leah’s birthday.

    Nope. Disappointed about this one!
  • Sunset at the beach
    Nope.
  • Visit Lucy the Elephant
    Nope.
  • Paint birdhouse
    Completed!
  • Get ready for school!
    Completed!
