Aging Expectations

Let’s Eat: Mikko, Carlsbad

mikkoDuring our trip to San Diego while in Carlsbad, we decided to try Mikko for dinner. This selection came as a recommendation so we thought…it would be awesome.

Not so.

I’m always extremely honest in my reviews but never overly critical. If I had a bad experience I like to believe the place was having a bad day or maybe they’re in a rebuilding year or maybe I’m just having a bad day.

Unfortunately, I don’t think this is the case with Mikko…

First, it’s in a weird location. I mean it’s convenient to the highways but right next to a 7-Eleven (with gas station). Not really the atmosphere I want to look at while I try to enjoy my nice, fresh sushi.

They sat us quickly even though there were quite a few people there. Unfortunately, there were also a lot of flies. I’m not even kidding. I killed three of them.

My need to kill them and cover them up with bits of the paper from the chopsticks did not make my husband happy, although I thought of it as a public service.

Then Leah had to go to the bathroom. It was fine but there was no soap to wash our hands (yes, I carry hand sanitizer). This is scary because I’m not sure how the workers are washing their hands.

We had sushi to eat, which was fine. No complaints there but the other things tainted our experience at Mikko.

Here’s what I loved:

  • nothing 🙁

Here’s what I liked:

  • the food was fine
  • the service was nice

Here’s what I didn’t love:

  • the atmosphere
  • the lack of soap
  • the abundance of flies
