Aging Expectations

Follow Your Heart

My mother was not the mother I thought I wanted.

She didn’t have an exciting job. She didn’t wear fabulous clothes. She couldn’t show me how to wear makeup (because she never wore any). She couldn’t help me with my homework. She would never let me win at card games. She wasn’t at all responsible with money. She didn’t learn to drive until I was 12 years old. She never had good advice when it came to boyfriends. She never had good advice when it came to girlfriends, either. She didn’t have beautiful hair, in fact, she always wore her hair up in a ponytail – always. She didn’t know how to whisper. She couldn’t sing on key but would still sing as loud as she could whenever possible.

Nope, not the mother I imagined in my fairytale life.

But, she loved me.

She loved me like nobody else has or ever will. She loved me no matter what I did or said. She loved me with good grades and bad. She loved me when I was dorky and popular. She loved me when I looked ugly and pretty. She loved me when I was happy and sad. She loved me even when I was mean to her.

My mother was a special gift to me. She showed me what love is. She showed me how to love. She showed (really showed me) me what unconditional love is.

It’s something not many people truly get to experience. And for that, for that alone – I am so thankful she was my mother!

I aspire to share that same love with my own family.

  1. Hi,
I love how honest this is. Mother’s aren’t perfect and it’s sometimes it’s hard to remember they are human and make mistakes. Thanks for sharing and for supporting Heart of Haiti. I love working with Heart of Haiti, the way we purchase can truly make a difference.
