Favorite Destination: Skiing

Welcome to my Guest Post series…My Favorite Family Vacation Destination.

I’m so excited to share with you other traveler’s favorite destinations.

Today’s featured destination comes from Deb Lowther. I met Deb on Twitter. Have I mentioned I loved Twitter? Deb is a mother of 3 young daughters who, when not running after the kids, is running in the trails! She blogs about Raising Healthy Kids and ensures her own have fun while eating healthy and staying active.  To read more of her articles, visit her websites and or visit her on Twitter @kidsGummyMum or Facebook at IronKids.Health and Adult Essentials.

Now here’s Deb’s Favorite Vacation!

Our Active Family Vacation!

Ah the family vacation; sun, surf, sand, relaxing under a palm tree, sipping a refreshing beverage OR a van packed full of extra sweaters, skis, boots, skates, snow shoes, toboggans, hiking poles, chili, hot chocolate, extra blankets, firewood and bathing suits!

Welcome to the weekly Lowther family vacation!!

I grew up skiing and my parents took us on a one week ski vacation hours drive away from home every winter where we skied to exhaustion and collapsed on the couch with the aroma of crockpot chili in the air.  Wanting my kids to have the same fun experiences, I had my kids on skis by the time they were 3 and spent the last 7 years personally teaching each of my daughters how to get down a ski hill. Now that they are 7, 9 and 10 and excellent skiers, we decided to join a ski club 2 hours from home and now spend our winters going on vacation every single weekend!

Concern over the extra packing and driving and the lack of weekend time at home to finish projects, do grocery shopping or laundry are instantly forgotten each Friday night when we reach our rental place and are seated by the fire. Full days Saturday and Sunday are spent outdoors skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, skating, hiking snow covered hills with our 3 kids and making new friends every weekend.  Vacation paradise for this family.

Work is left behind, chores and homework forgotten. We spend each weekend together as a family, doing something everyone has grown to love. We have made new friends that enjoy staying active as a family as we do, we have fallen in love with hiking hills covered in 12 inches of fresh snow, we have rosy cheeks, tired legs, and amazing memories. Our children are growing up loving the outdoors, loving winter, loving being active, and loving hanging out with each other.

skating too!

We share this with as many friends as we can.  Spending time together being active as a family is so important to raising healthy kids and fostering active adults, and we hope to encourage others to enjoy what our Ontario winters have to offer.   Many rent a cottage in the summer and think noting of packing up to hang outside for a week or weekend, why not do the same during the winter? Get outside and enjoy what winter has to offer!

Many may not consider a weekend of skiing a vacation, especially if you are dong it every weekend, but for this family, our ski weekends are definitely our favorite family vacation destination.

Thanks Deb! Your family makes is look like such fun 🙂  We love skiing too (well, I love the lodge).

Don’t forget last week’s destination: DeBourdieu.

Please note, I’ll be continuing this series,
so look forward to more great destinations.
